Butterfly and Cage using Serenade for Creative Cutter Room Challenge

Good morning and welcome to the first
Challenge as a DT member for
Love Bug
is the Challenge,
and the prize?
I used Cricut Serenade cartridge to create my project-
I cut four cages at 5.5" and a 3.5" square which I scored at .25" on each side and adhered to the inside to create my cage.  I than tied the metal butterfly and with same string tied the four top ends of cage and added a ribbon.

The butterfly (I made sure that the butterfly was a bug, and it is!)  was cut at 2.25" with its layers. I adhered coarse glitter to layer and fine glitter to base using my Xyron.-- I initially wanted all white, but after deciding to add the silver metal butterfly I changed my mind.

The metal butterfly has a sentiment= butterfly kisses.
Now go visit the other DT member's projects Carri, Jenny and Melin

And make sure you enter for an apportunity to win the Jasmine Cricut cartridge
(mhhh, I don't have that one!)

Heartstring's Design Team Last Posting :(

Heartstring Design Team Anything Goes Last Assignment!!!!

and Playing with Serenade - Flowerdisco and Friends!
I created a card and a treat box.
This particular butterfly is design #10 on the Serenade cartridge (or 10th design on keypad- first row).

There are many symbolic meanings associated with the butterfly.
  • The Mandarin Chinese word for butterfly is "hu-tieh". "Tieh" means "70 years", therefore butterflies have become a symbol for a long life. In this culture butterflies have also become representative of young men in love.
  • In the Japanese culture butterflies are thought to be representative of young maidens and marital bliss. Many Japanese families use the butterfly in the family crest design.
  • Germany has a very unique belief about butterflies. As butterflies can often be found hovering about milk pails or butter churns, they have become associated with witches trying to steal the cream. The German word for butterfly is "Schmetterling", which is actually derived for the Czech word "Smetana" which means "cream".
  • There are many links with butterflies in mythology from all over the world, many of which, in particular Greek mythology, link butterflies to the human soul. The Ancient Greeks also considered butterflies as the souls of those who had passed away.
  • In ancient Greek the word for butterfly is "Psyche", which translated means "soul". This was also the name for Eros' human lover and when the two figures are depicted they are often surrounded by butterflies.
  • In one of the Russian dialects, butterflies are referred to as "dushuchka" which is a derivative of the word "dusha" also meaning soul.
  • There is also an Irish saying that refers to the symbolic meaning of butterflies. This saying is: "Butterflies are souls of the dead waiting to pass through purgatory".
  • There is a small town in Mexico that also associate butterflies with souls. It is to this town that Monarch Butterflies migrate every year, around the holiday known as the Day of the Dead. The people of this town see these butterflies as the returning souls of the deceased.

I am not very happy with the card's outcome, but I love the fact that I was able to create my own treat bag!
For the card I used my Gypsy and using Fabulous Finds cartridge I sized a square to the size of my card or 5.5" x 5.5".  I started placing butterflies all around until I was satisfied.  I made sure that I place the butterflies in a way that when it printed I would have a space of 11 so that I can fold and make it my 5.5" x 5.5" card.
After using the Cri-Kits to draw I placed the top butterfly on the exact location on layer 2 so that I can cut with blade.  I placed a purple piece of card stock on the inside and glued the little pieces (right on top).

For the treat box, I used Fabulous Finds and Gypsy and Serenade to design the treat box.  All it took is 4 rectangles and the two butterflies!!!

Since I do not know how to draw (yet) scoring lines on the Gypsy it was easy to figure out to score from side to side right were the butterfly ends.  I cut two long rectagles for the handle one at .25 x 7" and the other a bit smaller (width wise) and attached with tiny brads.
